This time of year always feels like a strange mix of magic and exhaustion. There are twinkle lights and cozy plans, yes, but also full calendars, mental tabs left open, and a quiet craving to slow down without disappearing entirely. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it looks like to care for myself in small, realistic ways. Choosing comfort over obligation, softness over perfection, and moments that feel intentional instead of rushed. This post is a little collection of what’s been helping, solo dates I’m planning, cozy style shortcuts, books I’m swooning over, and the tiny choices that are making winter feel gentler.

Nearly-free ways to romanticize your December weekends
The pants I’m reaching for over jeans and leggings
Winter romance books to swoon over this weekend
And a red sweater styled 3 ways
Winter always makes me crave a little more intentional alone time, not the accidental kind where I’m hiding in my car or scrolling after everyone’s asleep, but the kind that feels chosen. Planned. Something to look forward to.
These are the solo dates I’m adding to my calendar this season. Some are simple, some feel a little indulgent, all of them are meant to help me slow down and reconnect with myself.
1. Make a Meal with Seasonal Winter Ingredients
One cozy afternoon dedicated to cooking something slow and comforting, a soup that simmers, a roast vegetable situation, fresh bread if I’m feeling ambitious. No multitasking, no rushing. Just cooking because it feels grounding.
2. Take a Long Bubble Bath
Candles lit, book or podcast nearby, no clock-watching. This is less about “self-care” and more about letting my body fully relax, something I forget to do until winter reminds me.
3. Spend a Day Reading at a Coffee Shop or Library
A solo reading date with nowhere else to be. Coffee refills, library wandering, maybe a pastry. No productivity required, just the quiet joy of being surrounded by books.
4. Get a Massage
An appointment on the calendar that forces me to stop. To rest. To let someone else take care of me for an hour. Winter shoulders deserve it. The local place I go to has a table warmer and its heavenly for cold days.
5. Take Myself to a Fancy Dinner
The kind with linen napkins and a glass of wine. I’ll bring a book, sit at the bar, order exactly what I want, and linger. No explaining, no compromising, just enjoying the experience.
6. Go to the Craft Store
Wander the aisles slowly. Buy supplies for a project I might start right away or might save for another day. There’s something deeply soothing about choosing colors and textures with no end goal.
7. Plan a “Nothing” Afternoon
No errands, no to-do list. Just time. Maybe I read. Maybe I nap. Maybe I reorganize one drawer. The point is that it’s unscheduled and allowed to stay that way.
Holiday parties are here, and while red nails are the classic move, this year I’m craving something a little more unexpected. Think festive, elevated, and still totally holiday-coded, just without the predictable cherry red.
Here are a few chic alternatives if you want your mani to feel seasonal but not obvious.
Espresso Brown – moody, glossy, winter-cozy.
Champagne Shimmer – subtle sparkle that catches candlelight.
Midnight Navy – dramatic, luxe, and perfect with gold jewelry.
Velvet Aura Nails – that velvety cat-eye effect in emerald, plum, or chocolate.
Pearl Glaze – frosty, glazed-donut energy but make it holiday.
Matte Forest Green – understated, botanical, elevated.
Gold Foil Accents – neutral base, tiny touch of glam.
Dusty Rose – romantic and surprisingly festive.
Milk Bath White – soft, sheer, snowy.

A little unexpected, a little glam, and still perfectly December-coded, without a single red polish in sight.
I don’t like jeans, the texture, the stiffness, the way they feel against my skin just never sits right with me. So for years I’ve lived in leggings and dresses. But this winter I finally found a pair of pants that feel like a grown-up version of comfort. The Haddon Style Pants.
These wide-leg pants are cut in Varley’s signature DoubleSoft fabric, think buttery-soft, stretchy knit that feels like your comfiest lounge pant but looks entirely pulled-together. They sit high at the waist with an elastic band and drawcord, and the wide leg drapes beautifully whether I’m pairing them with a cozy sweater at home or boots and a jacket for quick errands.
What I love most is the feeling of them. No stiffness, no rubbing, just softness and ease, but with enough structure that I don’t feel like I’m wearing pajamas out in public. They’ve quietly become my go-to alternative to leggings this winter, and I’m reaching for them again and again.
If your holiday outfits tend to land somewhere near the bottom of your priority list (we’ve all been there), consider this your sign not to stress. The easiest way to pull together something festive, without tracking down a last-minute outfit or braving crowded stores, is with a simple red sweater.
It’s classic. It’s cheerful. It has a built-in holiday vibe that instantly makes any look feel more intentional, even if you got dressed in approximately four minutes.
Here are three ways I’m styling mine this season, simple, cozy, and completely doable with pieces you probably already own.
Casual + Cozy
For holiday errands, school drop-off, tree-decorating, or anything that requires comfort first.
Pair your red sweater with soft joggers or wide-leg lounge pants, your coziest socks, and a wool coat or puffer for warmth. Effortless but still festive.
Shop the look: Sweater | Pants | Ballet Flats | Purse | Bracelet
Elevated Everyday
For workdays, dinner with friends, or when you want to feel put-together without trying too hard.
Tuck the red sweater into dark denim or a midi skirt, add a belt, and layer a long coat on top. It’s polished but still soft, thanks to the sweater’s cozy texture.
Shop the look: Sweater | Jeans | Booties | Purse | Bow Stud Earrings
Festive but Comfortable
For holiday gatherings where you want to look special and still breathe.
Pair with a silk skirt, a glitzy purse, statement earrings, and a touch of red lipstick if you’re feeling bold. It’s a chic, understated holiday outfit, no sequins necessary.
Shop the look: Sweater | Slingback heels | Skirt | Purse | Earrings
A red sweater is one of those tiny wardrobe decisions that does all the emotional labor for you, no overthinking, no stress, just instant cozy holiday energy. And honestly? That’s the only dress code I’m trying to meet this season.
If you’re craving a story that feels like twinkle lights, warm drinks, and falling in love while the world slows down, these three winter romances are perfect for a weekend escape. Soft, charming, and full of heart, consider this your invitation to cancel plans and curl up with a blanket.
Good Spirits by B.K. Borison — A cozy, small-town romance with just a hint of magic. Good Spirits blends found family, emotional healing, and that signature Borison warmth into a story that feels both comforting and quietly electric. Perfect for readers who love character-driven romance with wintery vibes and a slow, satisfying build.
Yours for the Season by Emily Stone — Tender, emotional, and deeply romantic, this one is for readers who like a little ache with their happily-ever-after. Set against the backdrop of the holiday season, it explores grief, connection, and the way love can gently re-enter your life when you least expect it. Bring tissues, in the best way.
Love You A Latke by Amanda Elliot — Charming, festive, and utterly delightful. This holiday rom-com centers Jewish traditions, family expectations, and a romance that unfolds with humor and heart. It’s light without being shallow, swoony without being over-the-top, the perfect feel-good winter read.
Whether you’re in the mood for cozy magic, emotional depth, or holiday sparkle, one of these is bound to hit just right. Pair with a warm drink, an early bedtime, and absolutely no guilt about reading all weekend!!
None of this is about doing winter “right” or turning the season into another checklist. It’s about noticing what actually feels good. The pants you reach for again and again, the book that keeps you company at night, the solo moments that remind you who you are underneath the noise. If winter is asking anything of me this year, it’s to move slower, choose softer, and let joy be simple. I’d love to know what’s bringing you comfort lately. a book, a ritual, a small indulgence, and what you’re making room for as the season unfolds.
