Sarah J. Maas has captivated so many readers with her richly imagined fantasy worlds, compelling characters, and intricate plots. Her works span several series, each with its own unique setting and lore. This guide will provide a comprehensive overview of the main series written by Sarah J. Maas, exploring the key elements of each universe, the primary characters, and the chronological order of the books.
There are a handful of different ways to approach the SJM Universe and you will hear differing opinions on this. I’m sharing what I believe to be the best reading experience for everyone.
A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) has been the gateway series for many of us adults back into the Fantasy world and it has been so much fun seeing so many people enjoying these books over the last several years.
That being said, let’s get into it!
Start with A Court of Thorns and Roses
ACOTAR is the series that you’ve probably seen all over, and for good reason! This is such a perfect way to get into the Fantasy genre. I will always recommend this series as your starting point if you’re new to SJM.
The "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series blends faerie lore with elements of Beauty and the Beast. It follows Feyre Archeron, a mortal huntress, who is drawn into the faerie lands after killing a faerie wolf. She discovers a world of magic and danger and becomes embroiled in the politics of the fae courts.
Next Up, Throne of Glass
Throne of Glass (TOG) was SJM's very first series she wrote and it is somewhat complex. Some might argue that this should be where you start, but if you're brand new to the Fantasy genre, I recommend ACOTAR first because it's a little bit easier to follow.
The "Throne of Glass" series follows the journey of Celaena Sardothien, a notorious assassin, as she navigates a world filled with magic, political intrigue, and dark secrets. Initially imprisoned, Celaena is given a chance at freedom if she can win a deadly competition to become the king’s champion.
Keep in mind, SJM started writing this series when she was 16 years old. They were categorized as a YA series for many, many years.
Personally, I consider ToG to be more of an Adventure Fantasy series as opposed to ACOTAR, which I would consider a Romantasy. While there is romance throughout ToG, it is not as prevalent like we see in ACOTAR.
There are several different ways you can read ToG. Specifically when you should read Assassin's Blade-and lots of debate as to which is the best. I will share them all with you and let you do your own research to find what is best for you.
Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn happen at the same time with different characters, so you can read them together!
I frequently get asked if the Tandem Read is worth it and my answer is always a resounding yes. It is such a unique reading experience that you can't do with many books, so l highly, highly recommend it.
Just Google "Throne of Glass tandem read" and you will find so many chapter-by-chapter reading guides that you can follow! It is a lot less intimidating than it looks, I promise.
And Finally, Crecent City
The "Crescent City" series is a contemporary fantasy series set in the bustling city of Lunathion, also known as Crescent City. It follows Bryce Quinlan, a half-Fae, as she seeks to avenge the murder of her friends while uncovering dark secrets about her world.
Crescent City (CC). This is SJM's most recent series she's been working on. This is an Urban Fantasy, so very different from ACOTAR and ToG, but equally as amazing. The first part of CC involves a LOT of world building.
*Do not read CC3 until you've read SM's entire backlist.*
Some Extra Things to Note:
I read CC 1 & 2 when I was about halfway through ToG, which was fine. However, I would NOT read CC3 until you've read SM's entire backlist.
If people are telling you that you don't need to read ToG, they aren't paying attention to the details!
Please, please, please trust those of us who have been through it when we tell you thatnto have the best reading experience and reading every book IS important.
Trust the process and I promise, you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!
